Lindy Frayne

Born in the South West of Western Australia, Lindy has been hand making felt garments for the past 12 years. Self taught initially, she has attended many workshops and been inspired by overseas artists including Charlotte Buch (Denmark), Jorie Johnson (USA/Japan) and Chad Alice Hagen (USA).

She has taught feltmaking throughout the Perth metropolitan area, and also shares her skills overseas; most recently visiting Southern India to teach a local community of women handicrafts so they could then become self sufficient and provide for their families.

Lindy's design is inspired by nature and our multicultural and Indigenous society. Most of her work uses 'Nuno' technique. ('Nuno' is Japanese for fabric.)

"I incorporate vintage kimono pieces and antique scarves in my work. My work is always evolving. In the last two years I have been exploring hand-dying naturally, using Fungi and Western Australian native flora." said Lindy.

Always on the look out for local windfall or verge clippings as they provide exciting results in her work.

"It's very exciting when a length of silk is unwrapped with Eucalyptus leaves and flowers inside, you never knowing how the leaves will react with the natural mordants. I insist upon using natural fibres, wool, silk, cotton, hemp. I am fascinated by the versatility and wearability of felt. The natural fibre keeping your body cool or warm as needed. My designs are unique, one off pieces; no two pieces are the same."
