Meet the Artist Print E-mail

This month Aspects gives you the opportunity to meet talented glass artist Elizabeth Mavrick as part of Aspects' Feature Artist Program.

Elizabeth will be appearing in store throughout July along with her recent works inspired by her travels throughout the Pilbara and Kimberley regions in the North of WA.

"My love for the land grows every time we travel into the "red" country. The enduring beauty and vastness overwhelm me and I feel that we are starting to actually feel the currents and spirit in the land. When I create it takes me back to the country: to the peace, the tranquility and the magic."

Elizabeth's signature kiln formed work is created by overlaying various glass powders and other glasses with similar expansion coefficients which are then fused in one of her three kilns. The annealing process (a cooling process which reduces stress in the glass) can take up to a week on some of her larger pieces.

"It is amazing to create a glass art piece which feels like the desert. I attempt to capture the sparkle of gum leaves in the afternoon light, the blue and green of a river winding off into the distance, that red of the earth when it shimmers in the heat, the feeling of timelessness in our land. When you are sitting, watching an orange/red sunset through a Boab Tree the colours and experience are intoxicating.

I love to experiement with the powders and different glasses to achieve what I call the essence of the bush. I wish the viewers of my work to feel the heat, the vastness but most of all to feel the spirit in the land."
